Tuesday 15 March
We are learning about time and temperature. I would like to learn more about converting centigrade to farinheight and vice versa.
Today I learned about time in a figure it out book (FIO)
Thursday 18 March
We are learning about different time zones around the world and how to calculate time differences.
Time zones are each 1 hour apart. They are there because it wouldn't make sense if the local time was 11.00am but it was the middle of the night. The greenwich mean time is the central time which runs right through London. There are 24 timezones across the world. I have learnt that each time zone has a name. Us in New Zealand are Mike.
Friday 19 March 2010EXCHANGE RATES
WALT we are learning about exchange rates.
Exchange rates are converting different currencies so they are the same amount for example $1 NZD = $0.72c USD. $1 NZD = $0.78c AUD. $ NZD = £0.47p GBP. Good - you could also have given an example of how to exchange, for example, NZ$500 to GBP.
Thursday 25 March
Decimal Subtraction
WALT Use algerbraic thinking thinking to solve decimal subtraction problems.
We used algerbraic thinking to solve decimal subtraction like:
3.24 - 1.89
+0.11 + 0.11
3.35-2=1.35
PLeased you have learnt this today Calum. How do you feel about using this strategy? Please let me know. TC

WALT
We are learning to use a number of different problem solving strategies to solve complex problems.
Today I learnt some new stratagies for problem solving like, Looking for a pattern, draw a diagram and many more. My favourite was Working backwards because it's quite easy. I agree Calum, but only useful when you have got the answer and have to work out how to get there. I am hoping looking at your past journal entries that we are going to get some quality ones this term Calum.
Tuesday 27 April
WALT: Draw a histogram. Decide which kind of data a histogram shows. I have learnt how to draw a histogram. They are quite easy. They show continues data. They look like a column graph but the bars are close together. Instead of being apart. Good description of the difference. Your challenge is to see if you can find a program that will create a histogram.
Thursday 6th May
Over the past couple of days I have learn't how to do a box and whisker graph. Before a couple of days ago, I had never heard it before. I think it's a good way of sorting data and finding out the range of it. It has a box which you put 50% of the infomation in then it has some whiskers coming out on either side hold up to 25% on each side of the infomation. Then (if there is any) there is dots called outliers wich holds data wich is 3/2 more than the median. I will use this graph in the future. Excellent explanation Calum. You have certainly picked up all the important points about this graph.
Thursday 20th May
Yesterday we did the first Olympiad of the year. I believe I did alright, but I good of done better. I got 3/5, which is better that my Otago Problem Solving. I need to work on read the question better for Question 4. And persistance for question 5. I want to get into the matheleitcs team. A great goal Calum. Remember to check your answer with another strategy and this may show where you have gone wrong.
Monday 31st May
Today I did a Student Recording for Knowledge Assessment for Numeracy. I did quite well I only got 3 wrong out of 40 questions. One was on stage 7 and two on stage 8. But I think I did well overall. I think my knowlegde gap is in fractions. That was a great result Calum. What fraction knowledge in particular is it that you need to work on - improper fractions? Fractions to %?
